What differentiates Gerald A Wempner's Mechanics of Solids from other similar texts is its integrated treatment of solid mechanics and the approximate theories of solid bodies The various theories of structural elements, rods, plates and shells are systematically derived, as approximations of three-dimensional bodies. Intended for graduate study, the text begins with the fundamental concepts of continuous media and extends through the theories of rods, plates, and shells The geometrical and mechanical foundations of the early chapters are broad enough to encompass the nonlinear behavior and, especially, the large deflections and buckling of thin bodies. The theories of rods, plates and shells are similarly derived from the general theories of solids. Each is initially introduced to describe the behavior of the specific differential element, in terms of the stresses, strains and intrinsic properties; displacements and rotations (rigid motions) are described only when the intrinsic theories are fully detailed.
