This is an abridgement of the Time-Life series of the same name. Its focus is on plumbing, electrical, heating/cooling, appliance, and home electronics repair. Included are chapters on emergency measures and proper use of such tools as multitesters and soldering guns. As a demystifier of the mechanical and electrical apparatus in our lives, this helps counter our sense of their inscrutable and disposable nature. For each ailing piece of equipment, a troubleshooting guide lists a range of symptoms. Next to these is a list of recommended repairs with indication of their degree of difficulty and time for completion. Each repair procedure is then thoroughly explicated with a well-illustrated series of instructions. A tinker's delight, this belongs in most public libraries, especially those lacking the full Time-Life set.
