This book attempts to provide a varied and balanced picture of Andalusia and assess the romantic attitudes of past travellers and writers. Popular subjects such as Moorish Andalusia and flamenco music are examined and the reader is introduced to many less familiar aspects of the province, ranging from the baroque architecture of Seville to the cultural life of Granada in the 1920s, as well as many little-known places and monuments.

The Moorish influence remains evident in the region's art, architecture, music, poetry, customs, and lifestyle. Bullfights, gypsies, flamencos, and food are but a few of Andalusia's contributions to Spain's culture. Tourists will find the gazetteer, comprising the last third of the book, the most useful portion, with its detailed cultural descriptions and highlights of the region's cities. However, very few specific accommodation and dining recommendations are listed.
