Sarah becomes warden of Gladstone College. The fellows are at odds over the future of this all-female institution. When the last warden died it was never established whether it was an accidental death or suicide. A potential killer adds further complications to the difficulties.

Janet Neel, a former administrator in Britain's Department of Trade and Industry, now works in London's financial district.
Neel, whose Death of a Partner was shortlisted for a Golden Dagger Award, turns in another solid performance with her tale of intrigue at Gladstone College, a women's school outside London. Gladstone's warden, Dr. Judith Symonds, dies in bed, apparently a victim of her own imprudent mixing of Valium and alcohol. Dame Sarah Murchieson is recruited by school director Sir Neville Allason to take over the college, whose finances are as dilapidated as its buildings and whose staff is "rent by schism." Sarah, who is well supplied with tact (she holds her tongue when Neville-- once her lover, and more recently the deceased's--turns his attentions to a married member of Gladstone's faculty) and spunk (she was in the Resistance in occupied Holland), hires civil servant and young mother Francesca Wilson as bursar to clean up finances. They are making some headway when a series of attacks on women walking on campus brings Francesca's husband, Police Superintendent John McLeish, onto the scene as well. By firmly establishing each character as a believable individual, Neel effectively and with plenty of humor draws the reader into the complex and often secret dynamics of Gladstone's small community.

Paperback. Condition: Good. Throughout her career in Her Majesty's Civil Service, Francesca Wilson has shown herself to be cool, assured, and supremely competent. It is something of a surprise, therefore, when Francesca - married now to Police Superintendent John McLeish and on maternity leave with their young son - seems to be going to pieces. Of course, the baby does cry all the time, and Francesca never seems to get out anymore. Help arrives in the form of a nanny and an offer of part-time work as the Bursar of London's distinguished all-women's Gladstone College. Combining motherhood and career seems to be the perfect solution for Francesca - until the trouble begins at Gladstone: Two students are molested, a prominent professor is stabbed, and the school is torn apart by the debate over whether to admit men. As Francesca draws ever closer to the dangerous passions behind the serene academic facade, award-winning mystery writer Janet Neel brings us her most stylish and suspenseful novel to date. 240 pages.
