Modest and reliable George Bland faces retirement, surprised to find himself suddenly alone and uncertain. But his solitude is brusquely overturned when the invasive and mercurial Katy Gibb appears. Katy, by turns sulky girl and sultry woman, offers George a last chance for a adventure, an abandonment of discretion and responsibility. In the contest of wills that follows, George discovers his true nature, his enormous capacity for compromise and self-deception. The result is a novel rich in understanding of human complexity and of the desire to take charge of one's own destiny.

Anita Brookner is the winner of the prestigious 1984 Booker Prize for Hotel du Lac. She is the author of many highly praised novels including Fraud, Dolly and Brief Lives. Her newest novel, Incidents in the Rue Laugier, will be published this winter by Random House of Canada.
It's difficult to imagine a reader who could bring this tedious and melancholy tale to life. Certainly Judith Whale is not the person for the task. Brookner's latest revolves around George Bland, a retired Englishman as excruciatingly dull as his name suggests. He's captivated by Katy Gibb, who disrupts his routine with her pure animal magnetism, and her impure motives. The story is primarily George's internal monologue, and a male narrator would perhaps serve the material better. However, even Katy's predatory half-American, half-English inflections are flattened by Whale's clipped and careful reading. Brookner's novel, with its static situations and monotonous accumulation of detail, is ill-suited to audio, and the listener is kept at even greater remove because of the reader's dispassionate presentation.
