Nina Bawden is foremost among twentieth-century writers of fiction for children. A reviewer in Publishers Weekly wrote: "I'll come right out and say it. For my money, Miss Bawden can so no wrong. Her stories area a perfect blend of humor and suspense, and that's a blend difficult to achieve." Ms. Bawden was born in London, England, and lived there until she was evacuated with her school during the Blitz in World War II. She later attended Somerville College, Oxford. She and her husband, Austin Kark, live in London, except in the spring and summer, when they go to their home in Nauplion, Greece.
Plato Jones is the son of a Greek mother and a Welsh father and the grandson of two war heroes. His sister lives in New York with his father, who was remarried, and his mother travels back and forth to Greece, always with a sense of mystery. This excellent production is a dramatization of family secrets made human. Eve Karpf's reading is spectacular, from the exuberance she instills in Plato, to the thick, husky voices of the female characters. She creates an aura of the Mediterranean with the dentalized Greek vowels and puts music into the Welsh characters with a completely different sound. This tape is suitable for every age and everybody. Golden earphones all around. J.P. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
