Poems consider art, witnesses, city life, love, perception, parents, language, and identity

In his 17-part title poem, Feldman focuses on the white plaster statues of George Segal, juxtaposing viewer and viewed to explore variations on the theme of "life after hope"an effort that could serve as the narration for a film on the artist's work. In the second half of the book he presents such subjects as an apartment sublet and a telephone call from a distant uncle in the refined, detached phrases of a grammarian: "nonce vernacular," "verbal detritus," `scattered nomenclature." This collection, Feldman's seventh, is a virtuoso performance sufficiently stylish and highbrow to assure his place among our most accomplished poets, but its appeal to general audiences will be limited. For large collections. Leonard Kniffel, Detroit P.L.
