About the Author

Beryl Matthews joined a writers' group when she retired, nine years ago, and started working on her own novel. The result was THE OPEN DOOR (Penguin 2002), based very loosely on her mother's early life. WINGS OF THE MORNING, the second part of the Webster Women trilogy, is to be published in September 2003. Beryl lives in Hampshire with her husband, and is working on her fourth novel and already has ideas for her fifth and sixth! Her hobbies are reading, swimming and golf but, as she says 'Writing takes priority though, and everything else has to wait'.

From Booklist

Matthews' latest has all the hallmarks of the perfect family saga: birth, death, sorrow, happiness, love, luck, and laughter. Readers familiar with the earlier books in the Webster Family series will enjoy getting reacquainted with the indomitable Rose Webster; her sister, Annie; and the rest of the Webster clan. The story opens in 1961, right before the Berlin Wall goes up. Rose's daughter, Kate, has just landed her first job as a photographer for the World Explorer. It has been Kate's lifelong ambition to work for the newspaper, but when her new boss makes her life miserable, she has second thoughts about the job. With sound advice from her parents, the support of her extended family, and a bit of luck, she opens her own photography studio; and although tragedy strikes not once but twice, Kate's spirit and fortitude help her survive. The book's happy ending will prove satisfactory to longtime Matthews fans and new readers alike, all of whom will already be eagerly awaiting the next installment in this likably gentle series.
