9780192116956: The Oxford Companion to Irish History

Synopsis

The Oxford Companion to Irish History offers a radically new and eminently readable introduction to all aspects of the history of this fascinating and complex land. Written by a team of 87 specialists, its 1,800 entries explore Irish history from earliest times to the recent past. Key figures and events are re-evaluated in the light of recent research, while emerging areas of scholarship, such as women's history and public health, are discussed in depth. Many entries focus on enduring themes of Irish history, including nationalism, unionism, and Catholicism, breaking away from a purely chronological approach to examine the contexts and traditions that underpin Irish identity.
In a field bedeviled by controversy, The Oxford Companion to Irish History offers a reference that is both authoritative and innovative.

From School Library Journal

YA-Even though Irish history is not a part of the curriculum in many of today's schools, YAs will be hooked by this book. The 1800 entries are organized in alphabetical order and, although most are short and provide only minimal detail, many are cross-referenced to other entries. Almost every aspect of Irish history is covered from the Neolithic era to medieval times through the numerous uprisings against British rule, to the recent troubles in Northern Ireland. Topics range from the obvious, such as the 1916 Uprising, literature, and the potato famines of the 1840s, to the esoteric, such as the gallowglass, pipe rolls, and the Black Pig's Dyke. The detailed maps help to place the locations of the events, while many of the articles include short lists of books for further reading. This volume will be particularly useful for students studying revolutions of the world or noted Irish literary giants such as Yeats or Swift.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This text offers a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of the history of Ireland. Written by a team of more than 80 distinguished historians, its 1800 entries explore every aspect of Irish society from the earliest times to the late 20th-century. Entries therefore vary in length from short definitions or explanations to substantial analytical essays. The book attempts to illustrate the ways in which interpretations of issues and events have changed over time, and aims to serve as a balanced point of reference. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR002266137
