This is the story of a rich man's son who renounced his wealth and lived and worked among the poor. The picture book depicts all of the best-known episodes of St Francis's life (preaching to the birds, taming the wolf of Gubbio) and evokes the colours and pageantry of medieval Italy.

About the Author:
Brian Wildsmith was brought up in the mining village of Penistone, near Sheffield, England, and he attended the Slade School of Fine Art. Upon completing his studies, Brian made use of his love of music and skill as a pianist in the National Service, teaching music at the Royal School of Music. He became an art teacher after the National Service but soon gave up teaching to fulfill his true ambition, painting.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3-Highlights of the gentle saint's life are told in a simple, straightforward first-person narrative, and the celestial glories of his spirituality are reflected in the lavish, panoramic ink-and-watercolor double-page spreads. Framed in gold, they gleam with brilliant colors and are filled with action and detail. Francis is almost a minor figure amid the sweeping landscapes, monumental 13th-century architecture, and splendidly dressed medieval people, all depicted with precise delicacy. Clouds of birds hover, hop, and perch. A multicolored angel watches over the saint's every move, and crowds swirl about him. Tomie dePaola's Francis (Holiday, 1982) is elegant but restrained, his figures frozen in eternal time. Joanna Cole's A Gift from St. Francis (Morrow, 1989; o.p.) is simpler, with blocky, richly colored paintings by Michele Lemieux. Margaret Hodges's Brother Francis and the Friendly Beasts (Scribners, 1991) has a sweeter text that emphasizes his deep love of animals, with powerful illustrations by Ted Lewin.?Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
