Synopsis

This book analyzes the catastrophic failures that have plagued international efforts at peace since the horrors of the First World War. The author draws on numerous examples of failed attempts at disarmament, the ineffectiveness of the League of Nations, and the shortcomings of the United Nations. These failures are attributed to the unwillingness of nations to put aside their self-interest and nationalistic ambitions. Instead of the idealism that could prevent war, the author finds that nations are swayed by propaganda, public opinion, and economic rivalries. The author argues that international cooperation has, however, succeeded in non-political fields. The Universal Postal Union is just one example of successful and necessary international cooperation. The book concludes by suggesting that there is still hope for a peaceful world, provided mankind takes to heart the lessons of the past and learns to put the collective good above individual ambitions.
