Excerpt from The Sweet South, or a Month at Algiers: With a Few Short Lyrics
The following metrical outpouring iof my impressions during a month at Algiers, has no higher pretension than that of being a succession Of truthful pictures, sketched from the life, among scenes rarely Visited by an English lady - scenes far too poetical to be described in prose. That is one reason Why they are here pourtrayed in verse, which, it is hoped, virill not render them less acceptable. For the rest, ask the birds Why they sing, and the fountains Why they flow. IS it not because they cannot help.
