Stainton, Lindsay. Turner's Venice. Braziller. 1985. 192p. illus., mainly color. bibliog. LC 85-14985. ISBN 0-8076-1134-4. $40. art The Turner literature is vast, but often narrowly focused. These two recent additions, however, will appeal to a wider audience. Lindsay's Turner is an extremely readable, entertaining, and yet very useful account of Turner's personal life and times. Lindsay works with a broad brush, frequently emphasizing a person or an event that likely shaped Turner's ideas about painting, without resorting to deadly psychohistorial jargon. The purpose of Stainton's book is, in the author's words, ``to make available for the first time a substantial group of Turner's Venetian works in color reproduction.'' Stainton emphasizes the watercolors, noting that many of the oils have been illustrated elsewhere. Prefacing the illustrations is an essay on Turner's Venetian sojourns and notes on the individual paintings reproduced. Both books are recommended. Raymond L.
