Excerpt from The Ethics of Conformity and Subscription
Church of England, have not formally seceded; or, who do not object to pay church-rates. If the line were drawn more strictly (as, e. G., to include only communi cants) so many persons would be excluded especially when their attention was thus pointedly drawn to their actual theological position - that disestablishment, fol lowed by still further division, would be almost inevitable.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex ethical dilemmas faced by individuals who hold differing religious views within a larger religious community. Written during a time of great social and political change, the author explores the shifting landscape of religious tolerance and the implications for both conformity and dissent. The author challenges the notion that a person must completely align with their religious communityââ â¢s beliefs in order to remain a member, and grapples with the question of how far individuals can diverge from accepted doctrine without compromising their integrity. Examining the practices of the Church of England as a case study, the author explores the ambiguities within the system of prescribed beliefs and rituals, questioning the sincerity of both the laity and the clergy in adhering to those established standards. The bookââ â¢s central argument hinges on the tension between individual conscience and the pressure to conform to a collective religious identity, particularly in the context of a national church. The author argues that a state of sincere intellectual disagreement is inevitable within religious communities, and that the pursuit of absolute uniformity ultimately hinders the pursuit of genuine religious understanding. This book offers a nuanced and challenging perspective on the nature of religious commitment, urging readers to confront the ethical implications of conformity and dissent in an era marked by both expanding tolerance and enduring theological disagreements. This book offers a valuable and timely examination of the complexities of faith in a changing world.
