Told from the point of view of the hero-a curious white mouse that appears on every spread-the rhyming tales within are the essence of simplicity: the creature "sneak[s] down the steps of the great pharaoh's tomb" in Mummy, and "sneak[s] in the castle one dark stormy night" in the Knight. Sabuda (Saint Valentine; A Christmas Alphabet) uses blocks of color-in electric shades of pink, yellow and indigo-and jazzy geometric patterns that mesh perfectly with the forceful, jutting pop-ups. Particularly striking are "the knight's newest trophy," a menacing, sharp-toothed dragon, and the concluding Mummy image, a 3-D mummy wearing "a mask made of gold." (Here, as on Knight's final spread, metallic paint forms a glittering finale.) It's rare to find a pop-up book in which the paper-engineering is the servant, not the master, of the art. Ages 4-7.
