Synopsis
Lulu wants her birthday to be special and she does not want to share it with her baby sister, so she decides to spend it at the zoo with a gorilla who is also turning eight.

Gr. 1-2. Lulu wants clowns and TV cameras for her birthday party this year. Her parents suggest a nice cake, instead. Then she reads about Samoo, a zoo gorilla who's also turning eight on Lulu's birthday. "I bet Samoo will have a big party," Lulu thinks, and she convinces her parents to take her to the zoo, where she huffs and pouts while her friends and younger sister seem to get preferential treatment. She finds Samoo, though, and birthday gorilla and girl share special sign-language gestures through the glass. Realistic dialogue enlivens this entry in the Road to Reading series, which deals with emotions familiar to most children. Bright, almost tropically colored drawings nicely illustrate Lulu's fury and sibling jealously and peace when she comes round at the end. Gillian Engberg
