Playwright-cum-sleuth Augustus Maltravers must sort out ancient witchery from modern murder when present-day devil worshippers reenact a centuries-old legend. By the author of Murder in Waiting.

Witchcraft, murder and a grisly legend cling to the roots of an old chestnut tree in Richardson's (Murder in Waiting) literate but flawed new English mystery. Amateur sleuth Augustus Maltravers investigates the recent murder of poet Patrick Gabriel in the isolated Devon village of Medmelton at the request of old friend Stephen Hart. He finds close-mouthed inhabitants guarding buried secrets. Who fathered Stephen's sexy teenage stepdaughter Michelle, and why is she having clandestine meetings with the bitter woman who owns the general store? What is the local rector doing behind closed doors? Maltravers's arrival disrupts the routine of an obsessive/compulsive banker and raises anew the question of the whereabouts of the dead poet's latest manuscript. Playwright Maltravers dreams up ingenious charades to flush out the required answers to the conundrum, but painstaking characterization cannot compensate for a wobbly narrative and little menace or suspense.

Hardbound. Condition: Very Good. 1st Printing. Description: Dust jacket art by David Scott. This was the sixth and last (?) in the Augustus Maltravers series which began in 1985 with the award winning novel, The Latimer Mercy (also published as An Act of Evil). ''The legend of the Lazarus Tree in St Leonard's churchyard is an unlovely one. Centuries ago, it is said, a young woman raised her fiancé from the dead, with horrifying results. Gus arrives in Medmelton to find the townsfolk silent and hostile with regard to the tree -- and with regard to the poet who met a violent death beneath its branches over a year earlier. Now, strange objects are appearing among the roots of the Lazarus Tree -- a lock of hair, a bunch of wildflowers, a vial of blood -- and Gus is worried that the introverted stepdaughter of a good friend may be involved.'' BINDING/CONDITION: black binding; a Near Fine book, with a Very Good+ dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact. 8vo (8.5 inches tall). 191 pages. Seller Inventory # 065840
