The swift deterioration of that relationship is presented in this fascinating inside look at the workings of international diplomacy. Kirk, the U.S. ambassador to Romania from 1985 to 1989, and Raceanu, chief of U.S. and Canadian affairs in the Romanian Foreign Ministry, share their experiences and perceptions of a series of diplomatic initiatives from both countries. While human rights and most-favored-nation trade status were the major topics of contention, the authors also give close analysis to Romania's internal political situation.
