Synopsis

'They came for the sea change,' said Auntie Sanni and she might have added... 'into something rich and strange.' Blaise and Mary arrive at Patna Hall, a hotel on India's shimmering Coromandel coast, to spend part of their honeymoon. Patna Hall is as beautiful and timeless as India itself, ruled over firmly and wise by proprietor Auntie Sanni. For Mary it feels strangely like home. In a week that will change the young couple's destiny, election fever grips the Southern Indian state and Mary falls under the spell of the people, the country-and Krishnan, godlike candidate for the Root and Flower party... - Includes a previously unpublished short story, Summer Diary. - Rejacketed as part of a series of Rumer Godden reissues. - With a new introduction by Raffaella Barker.

About the Author

From AudioFile

Coromandel Island, off the coast of India, is an idyllic honeymoon paradise for Blaise and Mary. But it becomes a hotbed of mystery and intrigue when Mary is attracted to Krishna, a local religious martyr. The subsequent deception results in a shocking and unexpected tragedy. A brilliant array of native voices, accents and dialects characterizes the masterful reading by Sam Dastor. His narration is so letter-perfect and believable that it almost becomes a distraction to this mesmerizing tale of degradation and violence. This is a good selection for the audio format. R.H.M.
