This book introduces a method of reducing complex dynamical systems of points to a single function which can then be differentiated to find solutions. The author had been dissatisfied with the existing methods for solving dynamics problems and believed that his new approach would be more efficient. The author presents a thorough mathematical basis for his method, and its efficacy by working through the problem of planetary motion. This idea could be applied to any system of points that attract or repel each other according to a definite law. This method provided a much more tractable mathematical problem, whose solution could then be used to analyze the original system. Originally published in 1834, this book made a significant contribution to the field of dynamics and remains of interest to mathematicians and physicists today.
