Synopsis
This book provides an extraordinary glimpse into the world of Indian materia medica in the 16th century, directly from the observations and experiences of the Portuguese physician Garcia da Orta. He takes the reader on a journey through the diverse medicinal plants and their applications. Orta's descriptions, grounded in close observation and the knowledge of local experts, challenge the flawed understanding of these plants in Europe at the time. Orta's account offers a unique perspective on the rich and complex traditions of Indian medicine and its influence on European medical practices. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of medicine, the exploration of the Indian subcontinent, and the fascinating exchanges between different medical traditions.
