Synopsis
This book comprises four acts of a tragic play set in the first and second centuries AD, between the north of Norway, Denmark, and the coast of Great Britain. It follows the hero, King Stagnar, rejecting an arranged marriage to the British Princess Allgitha and choosing instead the humble shepherdess Åslög, prophesied to bear him a child of great significance. Despite the initial opposition, feelings of jealousy and envy fester within King Stagnar's court as the story progresses, and he is eventually incited to reject and banish his true soulmate and their child. The themes this book explores are the struggle between love and duty, and the corrosive nature of envy and suspicion, and the significance it places on the importance of remaining true to oneself while grappling with the expectations of society.
