The first part focuses on "synchronic" approaches, which concentrate on the text itself. Here the literary aspects are in the foreground, including discussions of the limits of a text, structural analysis, narrative analysis, and meaning in context. The second part focuses on "diachronic" approaches, examining the phenomenon that texts in the Gospels go back to early traditions, and including discussions of historical criticism, form and redaction criticism, along with consideration of duplicate and triple texts and the relation between John and the Synoptics. A third part examines relations between Gospel texts and other passages in the Bible, and also considers Jewish exegesis and the apocryphal Gospels. A final part looks again at the question of the historical Jesus.
Brief theoretical introductions are followed by examples and illustrations, which are meant to serve as encouragement to personal exploration. Here, then, is an excellent, usable introduction to the study of the Gospels.
Wim Weren is Professor of New Testament Exegesis in the Theological Faculty of the University of Tilburg, The Netherlands.
