The complex of inter-related ideas to which the his torians of literature and philosophy have given the namec of primitivism' is at once a philosophy of history and a theory of values, moral or aesthetic or both. The two elements of it are, indeed, logically separable, and have sometimes occurred separately in the history of Western thought; and the motives which have led to the acceptance of the one are not necessarily those which have generated the other. But from at least the fifth century B. C. They have, for sufficiently comprehensible reasons, usually been associated.
