This is a source book of "tricks of the trade" of surface science, containing descriptions (with at least one illustration for each) of hundreds of techniques, methods, instruments, and tools in common use in surface science -- including physics, chemistry, and engineering. The methods are arranged in topical groupings for easy reference. Each is described succinctly, with a clear sketch of the apparatus involved (and, in many cases, of the physical principles as well). The book covers all the basic methods of surface science (but omits current areas of research such as the various scanning microscopies). It should thus serve not only as a useful reference to those just starting on experimental research in surface science, but also as a "vade mecum" for established researchers.

Yates-University of Pittsburgh, PAReview:
" For those of us working in surface science, the text by Professor Yates provides a practical insight of extraordinary value. This guide to practical laboratory methods covers a wide spectrum of topics dealing with the many facets of vacuum, electronic, mechanical, detection dosing and control. It pulls together, from a wide variety of sources, information that every person working in the field will admire and use. This is a splendid service to the community and will be highly valued. I congratulate the author." -- J.M. White, Norman Hackerman Professor of Chemistry, The University of Texas at Austin
""This book will become a classic instantly.... It is written by one of the great masters of experimental technique in surface science, John Yates. Our field is indeed fortunate that he has used his many years of experience to examine the instrumental literature critically, and to compile this succinct, comprehensive, and splendidly-illustrated text. This book will be an essential resource for every person in my research group and, I expect, in many other groups as well." -- P.A. Thiel, Professor of Chemistry, Iowa State University
"The title of John Yate's new book is suitably descriptive and seems to promise a lot; he has delivered on that promise.... This is a book from which a great deal of information has to be retrieved efficiently, and so a complete, well-designed index is a must.... It is a pleasure for me to recommend this book for its outstanding depiction of the importance of instrumentation and measurement to successful research in surface science as well as materials science, physical electronics, and semiconductor technology. It will be a valuable reference for both beginning and experienced researchers....you can't help but be impressed." -- Physics Today
