Synopsis
This volume follows the same style as "American House Now" which documented the vitality of modernism in contemporary architecture in America. It provides a selection of contemporary domestic design from across the European continent, focusing on those architects whose work extends and enriches the vocabulary and philosophy of 20th-century modernism. Examples from England, France, Italy and Germany, and many other European nations, illustrate both international themes and specific regional characteristics. Illustrated with photographs and drawings, the book offers more than a snapshot of contemporary building, it is a meditation on the meaning of domestic space as privacy and individuality become more valued and more scarce. Projects, which range from small houses in dense urban settings to large country houses, are united by the ideals of architecture: specificity and sensitivity to site, form and function.

About the Author
Susan Doubilet is an architect and a writer specializing in architecture. She was formerly a member of the editorial board of Progressive Architecture.
Daralice Boles is a former senior editor of Progressive Architectue and a freelance writer on architecture, travel, and culture.
