At that period of my life I was rather fond of the social whirl. It intrigued me because it was still a novelty. As a boy in St. Petersburg, with the exception of family dinners and celebration, I had gone to very few parties. Since my sister and most of my cousins were several years older than myself, my childhood had been unusually solitary. But my "social-butterfly" phase in Paris was soon over, and the parties began to seem boring and monotonous. Above all, they interfered with hard, conscientious work for which I always had a consuming passion. As I achieved some degree of success, I began to feel more and more strongly that I had a responsibility to develop, to the highest possible point, the talent God had given me. This feeling of responsibility became a motivating force in shaping the future course of my life. It is still one of the cornerstones of my artistic and personal credo.
