Larson helps readers become consumers of persuasion. The book presents persuasion through the examination of various aspects of popular culture--politics, mass media, advertising, the information superhighway--as they exemplify and teach critical theories of persuasion. Its multi-chapter focus on language and focus on critical thinking are combined with readability, a conversational engagement with the reader, and current verbal and visual examples of persuasion in action. Woven throughout this framework, Larson provides ample and understandable coverage of persuasion theory, research, and ethics consistently and repeatedly tied back to the theme of the book--the development of critical consumers of all forms of persuasion.

About the Author:
Dr. Charles Larson received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and began teaching at Northern Illinois University in 1968. He taught full time until May 2000 and then taught on a part-time emeritus status until 2002. In 2001, Dr. Larson and a former student launched a full-service advertising agency, where he now devotes his time when he is not fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing, gardening, or singing bass for a barbershop group or choir.
Review:
"Larson's Persuasion is an example-filled approach to persuasion education that accomplishes what is sets out to do-to help students become more responsible and critical receivers of the various persuasive messages that bombard us in this information age. I've used this text with great success for fifteen years."

"A very practical, receiver/consumer based text that attempts to enlighten the reader regarding persuasion influences in the real world. Just the right amount of theory is provided to provide a foundation for the application."

"The strength of this approach is that is aims to speak directly to the student and, hopefully, to engage them in concerns that are important to their lives. It is the application of the material in the book as handled in exercises, discussions, and assignments that really does the trick."
