Written by the leading gender communication scholar, this text introduces students to theories, research, and pragmatic information that demonstrates the multiple--often interactive--ways in which gender images of masculinity and femininity are shaped within contemporary culture. Balanced presentation of men's and women's issues; men's issues include the men's movement, men's friendships, and father/child relationships. Student commentaries throughout the text vividly illustrate how students relate to gender communication issues.

"My impression of Gendered Lives is that it provides a clear and cogent discussion of gendered communication in a variety of contexts. The professional, yet candid approach to what can be a controversial subject, makes it distinctly different from other textbooks on the market."
"Julia Wood has published a text on Gender Communication that provides the most complete and timely coverage of the inextricable relationship between gender, communication and culture. She has eloquently challenged us to become conscious of how we continue to repeat the ineffective, self-limiting culturally created patterns of the past in our communication and calls us to use this information to create a better more humane experience. Bravo Julia!!!"
"We frequently employ the "Questions for Discussions" as the impetus for interactions within the classroom. The questions are all well written, relate effectively to the experiences of the students, and do serves as the basis for lively discussions. Furthermore, the narratives by other individuals in each of the chapters are useful discussion tools as well. I think that these allow students to recognize and acknowledge that other people (presumably other students) do have perspectives that may differ from commonly held beliefs on the subject matter discussed."
