The dissimilar Sullivan twins attempt to fit into their new neighborhood in different ways, but both become involved in a "war" with the bratty neighboring boys

Grade 4-7-- Kitty's recently divorced mother now works, so she and her brother and sister come home to an empty house. Kitty devises a plan to get Babba, her mother's mother, to come from Florida to live with them, but since their house is so small, they need to build an apartment above their garage. The Zoning Board rejects the proposal, so Kitty attempts to get them to change their decision. A sub-plot concerns the sisters' antagonism (and finally friendship) with twins Bart and Brett, next-door neighbors who are always double-daring them. A cross between Greene's Double-Dare O'Toole (Viking, 1981) and Conford's Me and the Terrible Two (Little, 1974), this story has well-defined main characters. The resolution of the plot is not believable, but this light, rapid-paced, easy-reading story will be enjoyed by intermediate-level readers .

The trouble begins when twins Meg and Kit move in next door to "Bratty Bart" and Brett. Meg likes to pick fights with boys, and she particularly enjoys daring Bart to attempt unpleasant tasks. Kit, on the other hand, is embarrassed by her twin's aggressiveness, and is preoccupied with plans to move their grandmother in with them. Further, she doesn't understand the confusing feelings she has for Brett. Together Meg and Kit devise a scheme which does not unfold exactly as planned, but does bring them new friendships. Ladd touches upon many themes in this story: self-discovery, friendship, sibling relationships, romantic feelings, intergenerational relationships, divorce, moving and single-parent families. Her attempt to incorporate all of them into one book may overwhelm readers, but in spite of that, this is an offbeat and often amusing story. Ages 8-12.
