When a new lunchroom superintendent arrives at Graveyard School, the town's pets begin disappearing, and the school meals reach an all-time low, sixth-graders Stacey and Park wonder if there's a connection. Original.

The Graveyard School series gets off to a feeble start with this inane story. On the first day of school, the principal introduces the new lunchroom superintendent, Ms. Stoker, who promises the students that she will take their "tastebuds where they have never been before." Soon the cafeteria is dishing out such entrees as Meatloaf Surprise, Cannibal Stew and Mystery Casserole. The sixth graders are duly disgusted with the inedible slop-except for one boy, nicknamed Jaws, who eats it happily. The key ingredients of Ms. Stoker's meals become painfully obvious to the reader when a variety of pets begin disappearing from the neighborhood. The characters eventually catch on-and two of them confirm their suspicions when they make a visit (one night, during a thunderstorm) to Stoker's house, where she has locked Jaws in the basement. Neither funny nor scary, Stone's dopey tale misses its mark. Ages 8-12.

Grade 3-6-Lunch at Grove School has always been awful, but the weird new cook is concocting some truly disgusting menus. Sixth-graders Stacey and Parke become suspicious when local pets begin to disappear and odd things turn up in the Mystery Casserole. Then, when a fellow student vanishes, they realize that it's up to them to rescue him before he becomes another ingredient in Ms. Stoker's evil brews. This horror series entry has all the expected features-gross cover, stereotypical characters, and cartoonlike violence. There is an audience for this sort of thing, but libraries would be better served by additional copies of books by quality horror-story writers such as John Bellairs.
