Synopsis

Since 1948, the USSR had dominated the World Chess Championships - evidence, Moscow claimed, of the superiority of the Soviet system. But then came Bobby Fischer. A dysfunctional genius, Fischer was uniquely equipped to take on the Soviets. His every waking hour was devoted to the game and he had steamrollered all opposition to reach the championship. When he became increasingly volatile, Henry Kissinger telephoned Fischer and urged him on to fight for his country. Against him was Boris Spassky: complex, sensitive, the most un-Soviet of champions. As the authors reveal, when Spassky began to lose, the KGB decided to help him to fight back.

About the Author

David Edmonds is an award-winning journalists with the BBC. He's the bestselling authors of Bobby Fischer Goes to War and Wittgenstein’s Poker.

From AudioFile

Screwy, abrasive Bobby Fischer's 1972 triumph over chess champ Boris Spassky is depicted here in a political and psychological context that transcends the game. The authors provide only as much chessboard strategy as needed to clarify their story, one that others have told many times before, but not quite in this way. Narrator Sam Tsoutsouvas adopts a kind of "time marches on" style that in other hands would have stomped the text to death. Yet he manages to keep it light and play the humor while laying back the more sensational passages. His handsome, barrel-chested voice is a delight to listen to. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Since 1948, the USSR had dominated the World Chess Championships, evidence, Moscow claimed, of the superiority of the Soviet System. But then came Bobby Fischer. This black hardback book is in really good condition with normal wear and tear consistent with use and age. Dust jacket included. All 302 pages, text and illustrations are in perfect order. First published in 2004, First Edition. Drawing upon unpublished Soviet and US records, this is a fascinating story of history, politics and chess.
