From Library Journal

This slim and heavily illustrated study of the military prisoner of war is suitable only for the most casual reader. Its chief value lies in its wide scope: the status and fate of the POW from the ancient world through World War II. Numerous anecdotes from various memoirs are included, taken mostly from secondary sources. Although entertaining and informative, the book is marred by incomplete documentation and suffers from rapid changes in scene. The discussions on medieval warfare are excellent, but there is only skimpy coverage of many other crucial areas. The author served in the British army and escaped from Germany's Colditz Castle in 1943. Raymond L. Puffer, U.S. Air Force History Prog., Los Angeles
