Widely considered one of the finest poets of his generation, Tom Sleigh brings to his fifth collection his trademark intensity and craftsmanship, mixing the streetwise edginess of popular culture with Greek and Latin references, myth, and dramatic lyrics. Passionately comprehensive in its understanding of contemporary reality, Far Side of the Earth is unique in its moral gravitas, consolatory power, and strangeness of vision.

Interrogation
We began to interrogate each image for the promise of meaning we needed to believe in
in order to hold out against the wheel we were bound to and enthralled by
we were children of earth, sun, of the drugged eye of Mars.
We were frightened of our own need of origin we wanted malleable clay not granite . . .
But we sat at the table separating us and tried to make love a lens that would focus our past errors surrounding us like Medusa’s forest of stone men and women frozen in attitudes of flight and anger . . .
But it was necessary to learn every gesture and transmute it into ourselves to refute our sentimental questions, arid investigations, the smaller and smaller truths we fossilized around.
And unlearning was a learning more arduous and different than the lineaments of a stone hand reaching out caught in a seizure that could be a caress.
