[Read by Michael Wells]
No one can dispute the fact that Richard M. Nixon's life story is immensely engaging and that his place in the scheme of modern history will always be a landmark. Stephen E. Ambrose offers a balanced, unflinching portrait of one of our most complex and puzzling chief executives at the apogee of his career, rebounding from defeat to an innovative, high-risk presidency, already sowing the seeds of his ruin.

STEPHEN E. AMBROSE (1936-2002) was the author of Citizen Soldiers, Undaunted Courage, and D-Day, as well as biographies of Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon. He also founded the Eisenhower Center and was president of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. His book, Band of Brothers, was the basis for the HBO miniseries.
It was clear with the first of these projected three volumes ( Nixon: The Education of a Politician, 1913-1962 , LJ 5/1/87, an LJ "Best Book of 1987") that this will be the definitive Nixon political biography. This second volume covers ten of the most critical years of Nixon's career and is based upon the available written and spoken words of Nixon and his associates, a monumental body of material. Ambrose, an Eisenhower authority, makes a unique contribution in balancing Nixon's stunning political abilities and glaring personal deficiencies, noting the consequences for the country and its president. His is a captivating work, written with fairness and skill. No library should omit this from its collection.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This is a fine copy (both book and dust jacket) of 'A magisterial biography by a superb historian whose command of his sources is equaled only by the compelling hold he quickly establishes over the reader'. The cloth-effect paper covered boards are unmarked (no tears, scratches or bumps) and new looking. The royal blue quarter cloth binding of the spine section and the gilt title lettering remain strong and bright albeit with some small scuff marks at the spine ends. The text block is square and tightly bound. The top edge of the text block shows some light spotting but the fore and bottom edges are unmarked. Internally all pages are clean and bright with no inscriptions or other evidence of earlier ownership, although there is a previous resale price written very small in pencil at the top of the ffep.
