Alan Dressler is an astronomer at the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution, in Pasadena, California.

Offering a thorough and engaging answer to this down-to-earth question, Dressler, an astronomer with the Carnegie Institution in Pasadena, California, assigns himself the challenge of drawing a general audience into the thrill of the cosmological hunt. Dressler's aim is to impart the drive for discovery as he and six colleagues struggle through a decade-long project to determine what patterns and forces govern the immense network of galaxies. He supplies background fact and theory where necessary, adding details of telescope design and operation, and gives readers a good sense of the people and the painstaking labor involved: an unending process of measurement, remeasurement, cross-checking, and rethinking whose ultimate goal is no less than the knowledge of how everything came to be and where it all might be going. This "science as story" approach is refreshing and mostly successful, though the material sometimes slips beyond the grasp of the nonspecialist. A useful addition to general science collections.
