Comparing the relentless spread of corporate downsizing with a concept the ancient Greeks labeled chaos, Waitley (Empires of the Mind) points out that in the 1960s, scientists began determining that chaos is a natural phenomenon that can be understood and (within limits) managed. That was the beginning of chaos theory. What does this have to do with downsizing? According to Waitley, it means that since corporations are expected to continue streamlining the work force, we will have to live with that kind of chaos by building flexibility into our career goals.
