From the Publisher

Founded in 1906 by J.M. Dent, the Everyman Library has always tried to make the best books ever written available to the greatest number of people at the lowest possible price. Unique editorial features that help Everyman Paperback Classics stand out from the crowd include: a leading scholar or literary critic's introduction to the text, a biography of the author, a chronology of her or his life and times, a historical selection of criticism, and a concise plot summary. All books published since 1993 have also been completely restyled: all type has been reset, to offer a clarity and ease of reading unique among editions of the classics; a vibrant, full-color cover design now complements these great texts with beautiful contemporary works of art. But the best feature must be Everyman's uniquely low price. Each Everyman title offers these extensive materials at a price that competes with the most inexpensive editions on the market-but Everyman Paperbacks have durable binding, quality paper, and the highest editorial and scholarly standards.

About the Author

Henry Fielding (1707 - 54) started his career as a playwright until his outspoken satirical plays so annoyed Walpole's Government that a new Licensing Act was introduced to drive him from the stage. He turned to writing various 'comic epics in prose', including SHAMELA (1741), JOSEPH ANDREWS (1742) and TOM JONES (1749). A master innovator, he is credited with creating the first modern novels in English.

Judith Hawley is a lecturer in English at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Paperback. First Ed thus, later printing. Very Good in Wraps: shows indications of careful use: slight spine lean; light wear to extremities; mild rubbing and faint soiling to wrapper covers, which show a crease at the lower front corner; binding secure; text clean. No longer 'As New', but remains clean, sturdy, presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 504pp. Edited by Sheridan Baker. The First Edition, Annotated. Critical Essays. Chronological Outline and Bibliography. First Ed thus, later printing. Academic Press Paperback. Romping good fun and sharply satirical. Fielding has none of the puritanical prejudices of his contemporary and rival Samuel Richardson. Rather he gives a graphic, humourous and insightful glimpse of eighteenth century rural shenanigans. Both stories are to some extent a response to Richardson's goodie goodie novel Pamela or Virtue Rewarded, Shamela in fact so much so- mimicking then epistulatory narrative and burlesquing the characters and style of the original novel- that you'll miss most of the jokes unless you've read Richardson first. Joseph Andrews is to some extent also a response to Richardson's all-too-wholesome novel Pamela or Virtue Rewarded. Jospeh Andrews is substantial and rewarding, containing the full range both of Fielding's humour and social concerns. Vividly presenting the self-serving cynicism of English society his particular speciality lies in puncturing pomposity by comically abrupt oppositions between what his characters preach and what they practice. Detached, sarcastic and wickedly literate, Fielding somehow manages to mix slapstick with humor, blend eupheimism with innuendo, and mangle anyone - or any type - that he has a grudge against. A novel of the road - if you liked this, you'll want to press on to read Tom Jones. Seller Inventory # 39917
