Synopsis

This is the first title in a non-fiction series based on "fly-on-the-wall" reporting. Learn all about the Roman way of life as we go on patrol with Vespian's centurions, on the toilet with Titus and Marcus and to battle with Felix. Complete with pages blotted with squashed insects, olive oil and fingerprints, this is a book that should have the ancient Romans springing from its pages.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-With sketchbooklike color illustrations accompanied by brief captions and factoids, this book attempts to give a glimpse of life in a British Roman fort and the surrounding countryside. Subjects include the life of a soldier, children, religion, and more, tied together by a loose story about the birthday party of a commander's wife. Factual errors make this book an unnecessary purchase. Specifically, the authors state that Romans made themselves vomit in order to eat more (incorrect and gross) and that some houses had a special room called a vomitorium specifically for that purpose (a vomitorium is a large exit in an amphitheater). These basic, easily verifiable errors should have never made it to print. Save your money.-Lynda S. Poling, Long Beach Public Library, CA
