Buildings reveal so much, directly and by implication, about the character and quality of civilisations, past and present. The theme of this book is the interpretative quality of architecture. rchitecture cannot lie; what it records is undistorted by religious, social or political prejudices. The history of a country comes alive through its buildings, whether they are ancient, ruinous or aggressively up-to-date. They have much to say, and what they say may be understood without acquiring a mass of detailed, technical knowledge. As Mr Gloag says, `Hitherto, architectural history has been thought of as a specialised subject, something apart, a remote and segregated lake of knowledge instead of a tributary to the main stream of history.' To some extent the thirteen chapters of the book constitute a miniature history of Mediterranean and Western architecture; but it is only incidentally an historical work. Size: 8vo.
