Reviews

Here's a case in which a curriculum-related series (Graphic Science) puts the graphic-novel format to good use. Narrative and images nicely interplay to show the how and why of such basic safety practices as wearing goggles, calling for help when accidents happen, and avoiding contact with unknown substances. The titular character is a buff, bald African American, whose commanding presence is as engaging as it is pedagogical. The science experiments students are shown pursuing as the text moves along are suited to upper-elementary and middle-school curricula. The resources noted for further information are up to date. This will be a good choice for science classes during the opening weeks of the school year. Other Max Axiom books introduce topics such as photosynthesis, food chains, and electricity.
