About the Author:

Lou Kuenzler has come to writing for children relatively recently. Before that she worked as a theatre director, drama teacher and shepherd! Lou specializes in fiction for the 7-12 age group. She has previously contributed stories to Don't Kiss the Frog: Princess Stories with Attitude (Kingfisher 2008) and Cool Christmas Stories (Kingfisher 2007). She lives in London.

Posy the puffin has no luck laying eggs. After several unsuccessful attempts using techniques offered by Snow Goose and Mrs. Loon, she finds an enormous lumpy, bumpy, dark-green egg with pink spots. The other fowl are scornful, but Posy keeps the egg warm against the Arctic wind and hatches an adorable orange-colored baby dragon. Fearing that the dragon will do harm to their nests, the others drive it away. Once it is discovered that the dragon can warm the nests and help hatch the eggs with its fire, all is well. Children will revel in the unfairness toward the dragon and the ultimate harmony that ensues. Part of the I Am Reading series, this is in the usual format, with large type on standard-sized pages filled with a balance of text and brightly colored illustrations. This would fit comfortably with other easy readers featuring fowl, such as Goose and Duck, by Jean Craighead George (2008). Grades 1-3. --Randall Enos
