Splish! Splosh! Why Do We Wash? looks at the science behind bathtime fun. Archie the Elephant and his floating friend Bob the Duck are curious about water. As they splash and blow bubbles they wonder - Why do some things float and others sink? How does soap get us clean? What makes waves?

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Twelve easy experiments are offered in this colorful picture book. Each chapter covers a double-page spread and asks a question such as "What is a wave?" or "How does a shower work?" Activities include making waves in the bathtub and decaying a baby tooth in a glass of soda. Only two of the projects require adult supervision. Additional facts, such as why blood is red or what causes a tsunami, appear in "WOW!" sidebars. Amateurish cartoons illustrate the goings-on. Each topic also includes an illustrated reminder like "Check the temperature of the bath or shower before getting in." New words are italicized and explained in the text and glossary. Riddles are also included: "What has a head but no neck? A shower!" An appended quiz provides a review of everything covered in the book.

This attractive, large-format book takes advantage of children's natural abilities as scientists and the availability of bathrooms as accessible laboratories. Each double-page spread explores a question such as why boats float, how soap cleans people, why skin turns red in hot water, why the water gets cold, and how a toilet flushes. Explanations in the text are well supported by colorful, cartoonlike drawings and diagrams. Apart from a couple of minor problems, such as translating Archimedes' exclamation "Eureka" as "I've done it" rather than "I have found it," the information appears to be accurate as well as interesting. Simple activities, illustrated step-by-step, support the text with opportunities for hands-on learning without elaborate equipment or preparation. A winsome invitation to learn about science through play. Carolyn Phelan
