Reviews

Approximately 83 inventions are beautifully highlighted in this oversize reference volume. The majority of the attractive, photo-laden pages are designed with a large close-up photo surrounded by many smaller current and archival photos, with pockets of information sprinkled about. The focus is on the invention and how it has changed lives, rather than the inventor; however, some notables, such as Elisha Otis, Henry Ford, and Jacques Cousteau, are given double-page spreads. The inventions are grouped into six categories, although the groupings seem random. For example, “Money,” “Credit Cards,” “Bar Codes,” and “Stamps” are placed with “Handy Gadgets.” A time line at the end gives the sequence in which the inventions came about. They range from the wheel (circa 3500 BCE) to the all-electric car (2008). Of limited use for in-depth research, but perfect for browsing and inspiring. Grades 7-10. --Randall Enos
