Designed and photographed by celebrated Canadian photographer Roloff Beny, with editorial direction by Shahrokh Amirarjomand. An important photographic survey of pre-revolutionary Iran during the Pahlavi era, published immediately before the Iranian Revolution of 1979. The volume documents Iran's historic monuments, Islamic and Persian architecture, landscapes, religious traditions, industry, cities, decorative arts and cultural life, making it both a photographic art book and a valuable visual record of late-20th-century Iran. McClelland & Stewart's 1978 edition comprises 391 pages. Contemporary dealer descriptions record 522 illustrations, including 457 colour images, many full-page. Beny spent many years travelling throughout Iran for the project; another edition synopsis describes the work as the result of approximately sixteen years of travel and notes contributions from Iranian scholars.
