Dr. Seth Berringer works for a large managed-care provider in his hometown of Deer Falls. When Seth comes across the dead body of Lisa Dale, he erroneously thinks one of his troubled patients has acted out his fantasy of raping Lisa. In a panic lest he be sued, Seth removes the body to another location, making her death look like a hit and run. Unbeknownst to Seth, Lisa was pregnant and participating in a DNA cloning experiment supposedly using Jesus' blood from the Shroud of Turin. Seth's foolish actions bring about more confusion and death. Only Kerri Barber, a trauma nurse who believes in Seth's innate goodness, stands by him and tries to imbue him with her faith. The premise of Kraus's (Fated Genes, LJ 4/1/96) story is far from believable, especially Seth's bizarre conduct, and the book never falls into place.
