Magill presents a "Taming of the Shrew" on the high seas. In eighteenth-century Padua, Kate, the shrew, is supposed to wed before her younger sister, but she doesn't stick around long enough to get tamed or married. Just before the ceremony, she and her servant Matto, a dwarf, sneak away and travel to Genoa. Dressed as a young man, Kate pretends to be a student of the priesthood traveling with a servant. Happy with her successful disguise and the freedom that posing as a man brings, she boards a ship with Matto for the New World, but their plans are foiled when pirates attack. Matto convinces them that he and Kate will be useful, so they join the outlaws, and Kate learns about the vagaries of pirate life the hard way. Her rowdy companions care only for treasure and pleasure, whereas Kate yearns to better her life and plots her escape. Magill's multidimensional characters and interesting moral dilemmas make for a lively tale. Patty Engelmann
