Recounts the experiences of Koreans immigrants, many of whom fled the Japanese occupation of Korea, and describes how they adjusted to their new lives

Grade 6-10-Using primary sources, Takaki details the first wave of Korean immigration to the U.S., the immigrants' experiences in Hawaii and on the mainland, their organizing against Japanese control of their homeland, second-generation Korean Americans, and the effect of World War II and the Korean War upon their community. He concludes with a description of the influx of immigrants after 1965 and a look at Koreatown in Los Angeles, up through the riots of 1992. The inviting open format is broken up with numerous black-and-white photos. Some of the information overlaps that covered in Brian Lehrer's The Korean Americans (Chelsea, 1988); the strength of Takaki's account is the compelling personal narratives. An essential purchase for communities serving persons of Korean descent.

Gr. 6-10. Another entry in the Asian American Experience series, this volume about Korean Americans continues Takaki's efforts to challenge stereotypes. As with his books on the Japanese and Chinese (see BKL Je 1 & 15 94), Takaki relies on many oral histories and local documents, ensuring that readers never lose sight of group members as specific people in particular towns and places. The book will be especially useful to students trying to understand current antagonisms between African Americans and Korean Americans that have emerged in some inner-city settings. Black-and-white photographs, a chronology, and a list of further readings are included. Mary Harris Veeder
