Grade 9 Up–An accessible, informative, and entertaining overview. The authors identify writers with a connection to the city while placing them in their historical, political, and artistic contexts. In the chapter After the Conquest, the focus is on Geoffrey Chaucer, while William Shakespeare is discussed in Elizabethan London, and Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, and others are included in Victorian London. Mention is made of the social conditions in each time period, how the writers in each age connected with one another, and the areas and places they were associated with that are still standing or accessible today. There is discussion of the growth of theaters during Elizabeth I's reign and talk of the Great Fire, the Great Plague of 1665, and the Restoration. The book includes sidebars, eight pages of average-quality, color and black-and-white photos and reproductions, an extensive list of Places of Interest with addresses and descriptors, and a chronology from the Roman invasion to 1991.
