About the Author

Series introduction author Chuck D redefined rap music and hip-hop culture as leader and cofounder of legendary rap group Public Enemy. His music addressed weighty issues about race, rage, and inequality with a jolting combination of intelligence and eloquence rarely heard before. A musician, writer, radio host, television personality, college lecturer, and activist, Chuck D is also the creator of Rapstation.com, a multiformat online resource for the global hip-hop community.

From Booklist

This entry in the Modern Peacemakers series offers a concise, informative overview of the life of Mother Teresa, born Agnes Bojaxhiu, from her Eastern European childhood to her heeding of God's call as a teenager to her founding of the Missionaries of Charity, which would work with the "poorest of the poor" in Calcutta. Although her many good works receive full credit here, this biography also includes frank discussion of the controversies stemming from the nun's receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Insights about the debate are provided by her acceptance speech, excerpted here, containing attacks on abortion and artificial contraception; Slavicek also acknowledges critics' claims that Mother Teresa's efforts were concentrated more on converting India's poor to Catholicism than on genuinely improving the quality of their lives. Detailed sidebars explain the history of the Nobel Peace Prize and offer insight into India's culture and history. Appendixes include a chronology, chapter notes for quotations, a bibliography, and titles for further reading. Sullivan, Ed
